5 Ways To Make Your Oven More Energy Efficient

Keith Ford • Nov 18, 2021

Whether you’re an avid baker, a chef in the making, or a Sunday roast lover, your oven can really unlock your culinary potential. But we’ve all got to do our bit for the environment, so it’s important to pay attention to how you use your oven and how often - not only for environmental reasons but also to save you some money along the way. Take a look at and follow these 5 simple tips, and you’ll be helping the environment as well as your wallet - WIN WIN! Check them out.

  1. Don’t pre-heat the oven for too long - Simply put your food in to cook as soon as the oven reaches the right temperature - when that little light goes out, chuck the food in and let it do its thing.
  2. Defrost your food thoroughly beforehand - If your oven has to defrost food before it starts to cook it, it’ll obviously need to use more energy and take longer to cook. So try to thoroughly defrost anything frozen before you put it in the oven to save on energy.
  3. Cook several meals at the same time - Cooking multiple dishes at the same time is a great way to make more efficient use of your oven. Yes, it'll take some meal prep to cook in batches, but it could slash the amount of energy you use by a significant amount. Just be sure to avoid overcrowding your oven or obstructing any fans, as this will reduce efficiency - the exact opposite of what you want to do.
  4. Turn the oven off early - If you turn off your oven around four or five minutes before your meal is ready, the residual heat within the unit will continue to cook, without using any more energy. It truly doesn’t get any more simple than that!
  5. Keep your oven clean - A clean oven will heat up much quicker and distribute the heat more effectively around the appliance, making it more energy efficient - good for the environment and the ol' coin purse. Click HERE for the other reasons you should keep your oven clean!
