Top Tips For Cleaning Your Hob

Keith Ford • Apr 01, 2022

Your hob is one of the most used and most visible appliances in your kitchen and is a common place for grease, stains and food spillages to gather. Once food and grime has built up on your hob, it can be a big job to get it back to looking like new again.

Here are our top hob cleaning tips to make sure you’re left with a sparkling result, whether you have a gas or an electric appliance in your home. Check it out!

First things first... make sure the appliance is turned off and not hot (if you've just used it, give it time to cool down before you go to clean it. We don't want any burns no, do we?)

Cleaning your gas hob

Gas hobs usually have metal pan stands and removable burner tops and rings. We advise taking these elements off as this will make cleaning your hob a much easier chore for yourself.

  1. Start by filling a bucket or your sink with hot, soapy water (using your regular washing up liquid is perfect for the job) and put all the removable elements of your hob in to soak. This will break down grease whilst you’re cleaning the stovetop, making the removal easy peasy.
  2. Then use a damp cloth to remove the loose dirt or debris from your stovetop and spray on the kitchen surface cleaner of your choice, and leave on for the recommended time on the bottle. We recommend using a non-caustic and environmentally friendly product.
  3. Now wipe off the cleaning product with a damp cloth to remove any burnt on stubborn stains.
  4. Then polish the clean surface with a dry microfibre cloth to leave it smooth and shining.
  5. Any grease on the pan racks and burner rings should now now be easy to remove after  with a clean cloth or a sponge after soaking. For the more stubborn stains, use an old tooth brush.
  6. Then leave everything to dry completely before putting them back onto the hob.

Cleaning your electric hob

An electric plate hob usually has raised elements to heat your pans on. This means that it’s easy for food, grease and grime to burn into the space between and even beneath the elements of your appliance. For your electric hob clean, you can use your normal kitchen degreaser. As always, we recommend using a natural and non-caustic solution.

  1. Firstly, spray the hob with your chosen cleaning solution and leave it to work for around 5  minutes - this should loosen any burnt-on stains. If not, leave the solution on for a little longer.
  2. Then use a clean, damp cloth to wipe over the hob to remove any dirt and burnt on food. Repeat this until all stains are lifted. If there’s food in between and beneath the raised plates, use an old toothbrush to get into all the nooks and crannies.
  3. Now wipe everything down again with a damp cloth to remove any remaining product. And then, make sure your hob is completely dry before using it again.
